The Times Flawed Mossad Report

American outlets aren’t the only ones that struggle with getting basic facts right or maintaining standards. The Times, which is based in the United Kingdom, published an article last week claiming to examine new evidence from the released Epstein files to suggest that Jeffrey Epstein worked for Mossad.

I have previously covered in detail the claimed evidence supporting the theory that Epstein was an intelligence agent. That analysis showed the evidence is extremely weak or purely circumstantial. In fact, it would be highly unlikely for a Mossad agent to spend so much time associating with a left-wing former Israeli prime minister who was hated by most people in the current Israeli government. While it’s possible Epstein was used as an asset at some point, the most likely agencies involved would be the CIA or KGB.

In any case, The Times article relies overwhelmingly on documented claims from a “confidential informant” who asserted that Epstein was a secret Mossad agent. It has since been revealed that this informant is the known troll, Holocaust denier, and con artist Chuck Johnson. Johnson’s most recent escapade involved attempting to blackmail various companies by falsely claiming ties to intelligence agencies. He was found liable for civil racketeering and ordered to pay $40 million to his victims. That is not a credible source for reliable information about Jeffrey Epstein’s possible ties to intelligence agencies.

Even worse, the author of the article shared it along with a fake AI-generated picture of Jeffrey Epstein with the President of Israel. She later admitted it was fabricated and deleted it.

There has been such a moral panic surrounding the Epstein case that much of what circulates these days is misinformation or misleading—even when shared by supposed news organizations.
