Iowa State Fair
There were two things that stood out to me about last weekend’s Iowa State Fair.
1. The first moment was DeSantis proudly sharing with Gov. Kim Reynolds how well his young son was doing in little league. The conversation was normal and representative of many American families but has become unique in politics. Instead of the proud dad devoted to his wife, we’ve increasingly normalized people who have constant affairs, are addicted to prostitutes and happy endings, dodge child support, grope women in clubs, and post ads looking for other men to sleep with their wives. And that is just accounting for Donald Trump and his senior advisers. I understand that we shouldn’t look for politicians to be perfect role models, but we should at least strive to do better than many of the current people we elevate in politics.
2. Trump is simply not interested in campaigning this time around. He skipped the fireside chat with Iowa’s governor and most other events. Instead, he arrived on his donor-funded private jet with members of Florida’s congressional delegation to make a quick appearance before bolting back to his jet. This was a major contrast from candidates like DeSantis, who spent the entire day talking to voters and hanging out with his family at the fair. Meanwhile, Trump spent more of his time with Laura Loomer, the insane bigot and conspiracy theorist, than Iowa voters last weekend. Loomer was actually hired by the Trump campaign in March, but the job offer was withdrawn after public backlash. Trump is clearly taking the race for granted at this point in a way very reminiscent of Hillary Clinton in 2016. We will see if Iowa voters choose to make him pay a price for it.
