Blaming Climate Change for California’s Poor Land Management
State Farm announced last week that it would no longer accept home insurance applications in California, dealing a major blow to the insurance market in that state. The company offered several reasons for the withdrawal, including high construction costs, policies related to the reinsurance market, and catastrophe exposure in the state.
News outlets such as The Washington Post, Axios, Vox, and The New York Times suggested that State Farm was mainly driven out due to climate change. However, the company’s press release specifically referenced California’s major problem with wildfires, which are problematic mainly due to the state’s poor land management policies and fire suppression strategies.
Canada’s New Murder Regime
I still don’t understand the lack of outrage regarding Canada’s move to legalize assisted murder. Since 2021, Canada has expanded their assisted suicide program criteria to eliminate any requirement that the person was likely to die anytime soon.
New evidence suggests that poverty is now a serious consideration among those deciding to use the program. In 2024, Canada is planning to expand their program even further to allow anyone with mental illness to qualify.
