Antisemitic Mob Comes to Berkeley

It’s no secret that UC Berkeley, like several other major progressive universities, has a serious antisemitism problem on campus. Jewish groups filed a lawsuit against the university in late 2023 and the US Department of Education Civil Rights Division has received at least one complaint against Berkeley Law School. Still, Berkeley officials have failed to react, which led to a full-blown antisemitic mob invading and shutting down an event with an Israeli speaker last week.

Among the details from the incident, one Jewish girl reported being choked while another Jewish student had activists spit in his face while allegedly repeatedly shouting “Jew” at him. Berkeley leadership released a statement decrying the attack, but there’s little evidence that they’re doing anything substantive to punish the perpetrators. 

Some may view this attack and others as only targeting Jews, but the reality is that these mobs are attacking American values. National Review has a must-read essay titled “What Jews Mean to America.” The essay argues that Jews and Israel have a deep connection to America’s founding and the values on which Western civilization is based. The hatred we’re seeing on some college campuses and streets is also about hatred of those values. The same is true of the riots in Europe. Fighting these efforts is as much about preserving American values as it is defending Israel or Jews.
