TikTok Ban
The public debate about a bill requiring TikTok to divest from their CCP-controlled parent company, ByteDance, or face a possible ban in the U.S. is heating up. Much of the coverage ignores that all the platform would need to do is separate from ByteDance to continue operating in the U.S. It also ignores that TikTok has consistently misled over how much access and control China currently has over the platform and the data of American users.
It’s worth noting that Donald Trump issued an executive order trying to force ByteDance to sell TikTok during his final days as President but suddenly came out against this bill doing almost the same thing he had wanted to do. That flip occurred after Trump met with one of TikTok’s biggest investors, political donor Jeff Yass.
