Chicago Tribune and Others Fall for False ICE Story
Chicago Public School officials went to news outlets last Friday with a claim that ICE officials had come to an elementary school within the city as part of an immigration action and were turned away. The Chicago Tribune and other publications picked up the claim. MSNBC also ran with the story. This led to a lot of outrage and panic with claims that immigration officials were planning to raid schools as part of the more aggressive posture adopted under the Trump administration. Only it turned out to be completely false. It was agents for the Secret Service, not ICE, that came to the school while investigating threats made against someone with Secret Service protection. It’s unclear why these news outlets ran with the story before confirming.
