Claudine Gay Reactions Expose Rot Within Academia and Media
The reaction to Claudine Gay’s resignation last week was beyond absurd. Many of her defenders in the press and academia ignored the damning evidence and instead focused on the source of the claims. By having so many academics come out to defend plagiarism and argue for suppressing the story because it originated from people whom they don’t like, those groups revealed the extreme corruption within their respective industries.
The most ridiculous example was an AP article that referred to her plagiarism allegations as a “new conservative weapon.” It even absurdly suggested that Christopher Rufo using the term “scalped” was indicative of this resignation being comparable to the scalping of Native Americans, which they incorrectly identified as a practice exclusive to White colonists seeking to eradicate the native population. The AP eventually changed the headline and released a statement that the “story didn’t meet [their] standards,” but offered no indication of changes that would prevent reoccurrence. That’s exactly why academia and the media have a credibility problem that isn’t going away.
